Walter Sparrow (Jim Carrey), who becomes obsessed with the number 23, turns his once ideal life into a psychological torture hell that could lead to his own and his loved ones' deaths. Influenced by the mysterious novel called "The Number 23" that he can't seem to let go of, Walter is forced to open the door to his past secrets in order to continue his future with his wife Agatha (Virginia Madsen) and teenage son Robin (Logan Lerman).

The book, given to Walter as a birthday gift by Agatha, eerily reflects Walter's life with its chilling and mysterious murder, darkness, and bizarre elements. The life of the main character in the book, a distracted detective named Fingerling (also played by Carrey), is filled with moments that resemble Walter's own past. As the world of the book comes to life, Walter is drawn into its most terrifying and provocative part: Fingerling's obsession with the hidden power of the number 23.

This obsession spreads from the book and begins to control Walter. He sees this number everywhere in his life and starts to believe that he is doomed to commit the same horrifying crime as Fingerling, which is murder. Nightmarish dreams take hold of Walter's mind, where his wife and family friend Isaac French (Danny Huston) experience terrible things. In this situation, Walter has no choice but to desperately struggle to unravel the mysteries in the book.
